Basic Fishmeal Mix.
4oz Soya Flour
6oz White Fish Meal
This is a very simple recipe and it has caught loads of fish. It is based on a recipe published in an old Catchum book. It may be simple, but believe me, some mixes produced by some bait companies are very similar.
Fishmeal + Bird Food Mix.
4 oz Sluis CLO
6 oz White Fishmeal
I later made a simple substitution of bird food for the soya flour. You don't have to use CLO, Nectarblend, Red Factor, etc. will all do instead. or use crushed seeds (see Seedbaits Page).
I have read all sorts of things in magazines and books about a mixture of fishmeals being superior to one type used on it's own. I'm sorry I must disagree (until krill came along - but more of that later), I found plain white fish meal used on it's own with soya and semolina to be the best.
For those wanting to try other types of fishmeal, please give them a go. I had good results on a sardine meal. You can of course blend different meals together.
A Not So Fishy Mix + Yellow Birdfood.
4 oz Soya Flour
3 oz White Fishmeal
3 oz Nectarblend or Redfactor
Mixes containing fishmeal and yellow bird foods are very popular. This mix cuts down on the fishmeal a bit, which means it's smell doesn't dominate the base mix so much.
For people who want to use a bait with a balanced nutritional profile, it's ideal. Protein content is just over 30% and their is an excellent spread of other nutrients. Before some clod says there's no vitamins, they are provided mainly by the eggs and birdfood. It's dead cheap to make, so you can put shed fulls in.
To add more bird food or some maize meal, add 2 oz of CLO, maize meal, crushed seeds etc., and cut the semolina or soya flour by 2 oz.
Red Spicy Fishmeal Mix.
If you want a spicy mix you can add the normal 1to 2 oz of Robin Red or RRR or a mixture of each to any of the above recipes. If you can't get hold of Robin Red or RRR, try half an ounce of curry powder.
Krill Mix.
2 oz Maize or Corn Meal or Sluis CLO
4 oz Soya Flour
2 oz Krill Meal
1 oz White Fishmeal
3 oz Nectarblend or Red Factor
1 oz Mixture of Robin Red and RRR
I have recently being trying Krill meal and I am very impressed with the results. You don't want to much in, as it is very buoyant. So far, I have gone as high as 2oz of Krill in 16oz of bait with no problems.
The mix can be simplified by removing the 2 oz of maize meal and increasing the semolina to 6 oz. You could also use 4 oz of fishmeal and remove the Nectarblend / Red Factor, orvisa versa. Also the Robin Red / RRR could be left out.
Tip.
If you want to try a fishmeal mix, but you don't feel like sending off for any or your local pet shop doesn't sell it, don't worry. Have a look in the groundbait section of your local tackle shop. Companies like Sensas and Van Den Eyden have now started selling pure fishmeal.
Tip.
Fishmeal mixes take about 5 medium sized eggs per 16oz of base mix.
